FILM FORMING COMPOSITION FOR SUNSCREENS AND THE LIKE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A water-based, cosmetically acceptable, cream or lotion composition for producing an adherent, breathable continuous film on the skin of the user, resulting film being resistant to removal by the action of water of perspiration but readily removable by washing with a solution of soap or another emulsifier, comprises a major amount (in excess of 50% by weight) of water; a minor, effective amount of an oil soluble, hydrophobic active ingredient such as sunscreening agent; a non-ionic, oil soluble emollient, an emulsifying system comprising a member selected from the fatty acids and the carboxy vinyl polymers neutralized with ammonia or a fugitive amine; and a film-forming, water insoluble acrylic interpolymer containing carboxylic acid groups, which polymer has been solubilized by neutralizing the carboxylic acid groups with ammonia or a fugitive amine.
