- 9 - OIL PAN SNAP ON STUDS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The installation of an oil pan on an engine block is facilitated through the use of studs consisting of a shank that is threaded at one end and tapered at the other, and has a resilient wire projecting from the side of the stud and towards the threaded end. Before the oil pan is installed, four of the studs are screwed into spaced bolt holes in the engine block. The oil pan is then lifted up onto the studs and pressed over the springs. The springs compress and then expand on the underside of the oil pan flange to hold the pan in place while bolts are installed in the remaining bolt holes. The studs can then be removed and the final bolts installed. This obviates the use of a second person to hold the pan in place while it is being installed and maintains alignment of the pan so that the pan gasket is not displaced during installation.
