OIL RECOVERY BY ALKALINE WATERFLOODING Abstract of the Disclosure Oil recovery by waterflooding employing an alkaline agent to generate surfactants in situ. The aqueous solution of alkaline agent is preceded by an aqueous pretreatment solution of an inorganic polyphosphate which functions to complex divalent metal ions, to satisfy adsorption sites in the reservoir, and to buffer the pH of the alkaline solution. Preferably, the inorganic polyphosphate is present in the alkaline solution as well. -1-
