27976 Abstract of the Disclosure A tar sand extraction process comprising contacting tar sands with water in the presence of a flocculating agent comprising hydroxyaluminum. The tar sands can be first contacted with a hydro- carbon solvent and then with an aqueous solution containing the hydroxyaluminum. The hydroxyaluminum aids in the separation of clay and solid fines thereby resulting in an efficient process for extracting bitumen and recovering the water for use in recycle.
