ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Petroleum may be recovered from viscous petroleum containing formations including tar sand deposits by first creating a fluid communication path in the formation, fol- lowed by injecting via an injection well an aromatic sol- vant such as benzene, saturated with carbon dioxide at the injection pressure into the fluid communication path, fol- lowing the injection of the solvent with the injection of an oil-displacing fluid such as hot water, steam, or superheated steam and recovering oil from the formation via a production well.
