ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Surficial oil sands deposits are mined by first contacting the deposit with hot dilute aqueous sodium hydroxide solution to form a crude emulsion of the bitumen in the deposit. The resulting slurry then is readily removed from the deposit by simple equipment, such as mechanical or hydraulic dredges. The sand is separated by settling and the remaining bitumen emulsion can be processed by contact with slaked lime to recover bitumen and alkali. The recovered alkali then is recycled to the deposit.
