DEVICE FOR HIGH CAPACITY RECOVERY OF SPILLED OIL AND OIL/WATER MIXTURES FROM A WATER SURFACE AND HIGH RATE SEPARATION AND STORAGE OF THE RECOVERED MIXTURE FOR PUMPAGE OF THE OIL TO AN OIL STORAGE VESSEL Abstract A device for the high rate recovery of oil or an oil/water mixture from a water surface and then to separate the oil from the water at a high rate and store it for later pumping (or continuous pumping) to other oil storage vessels for shipping to refinement facilities. The vessel utilizes a hydrodynamically stabilized, air-float controlled skimmer or skimmers which may be adjusted to skim at or below the water surface to collect the oil and/or oil/water mixture. The skimmer(s) direct the fluid to high capacity submerged hydraulically driven pumps which intake the fluid and disperse the fluid through a centrifuge or a centrifuge pipe into a large volume collection and separation vessel which is also hydrodynamically stabilized and air float controlled. The oil and oil/water mixture is further separated in the vessel due to fluid flow rate, fluid path and physical properties of the fluids and the physical size and dimension of the container. The separated water is directed out a portion of the bottom of the separation vessel which is open to atmosphere while the oil remains floating in the vessel. A second set of float adjusted hydraulically driven submersible high capacity pumps remove the separated oil from the separator in a continuous operation, or the oil may be stored in the separator for later pumpage to a storage and shipping vessel. The complete device is self contained, floats on its own and contains its own prime mover for pumps and hydraulics and may be self propelled, pushed or towed. For stationary use the skimmer(s) and separator vessel may be located apart from each other such that the skimmer(s) could be floated on a fluid surface to collect oil and the separator (vessel) could be located on land at some distance and the two components would be connected only by piping and/or hoses.
