ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process of the removal of oil deposited on the earthern formation of a shoreline which is abutted from a body of fresh water or sea water which comprises the steps of: contacting the oil deposited on the earthern formation with a sur- factant solution for a sufficient period of time for the surfactant solution to penetrate the oil; washing with water the oil and the solution of surfactants from the earthern formation into the body of water, the oil and the surfactants forming droplets on the surface of the body of water; and removing the droplets from the surface of the body of water by a mechanical process.
