The present invention is directed to method of producing a postal mailpiece under direction of a software application in a data processing system that reduces time and memory capacity requirements for producing the postal mailpiece. A software control is encapsulated within an object to form a mailpiece object, wherein the mailpiece object is OLE enabled. Encapsulation of the software control provides the software application with a set of mailpiece production capabilities when the mailpiece object is embedded within the application. The properties of the mailpiece object are established, and the mailpiece object is embedded within the software application to provide selectable functionality representative of the mailpiece requirements for a postal service. The embedded mailpiece object can then be utilized to produce a postal mailpiece the meets the requirements of the postal service under the direction of the software application.
