ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A silica xeogal having improved crush strength having a chemical composition in terms of weight percent dry basis; SiO2 over 99%; Fe2O3 - 0.01 - 0.03%; Na2O p 0.02 - 0.09%; and Al2O3 less than 0.4%. The silica xerogel is useful in the prep- aration of improved phosphric acid olefin hydration catalysts.
