ABSTRACT A process and catalyst for hydrating olefins to form alcohols. The olefins are contacted with water vapor in the presence of an improved hydration catalyst comprising a predominantly siliceous support material calcined prior to impregnation with phosphoric acid. The supported catalyst is prepared by forming a mixture of from 50-70 (wt.) % diatomaceous earth, from about 15-25 (wt.) % bentonite, and from about 5-35 (wt.) % of a combustible organic filler material; calcining said mixture at a temperature of from about 1200°F, to about 1500°F.; and then impregnating the calcined support with phosphoric acid.
