Oligomer products are obtained by contacting an .alpha.-olefin monomer containing 6-20 carbons with a catalyst comprising boron trifluoride and an alcohol alkoxylate. Preferred products are 1-octene and/or 1-decene dimer and/or co- dimer compositions having improved low temperature properties and useful per se or in hydrogenated form together with one or more oil additives as heat transfer, lubricating, functional, and/or insulating fluid compositions for use in apparatus such as electrical transformers.
