The refrigeration system for an ethylene plant comprises a closed loop tertiary refrigerant system containing methane, ethylene and propylene. The tertiary refrigerant from a compressor final discharge is separated into a methane-rich vapor fraction and two levels of propylene-rich liquids so as to provide various temperatures and levels of refrigeration in various heat exchange stages while maintaining a nearly constant refrigerant composition flowing back to the compressor and with the bulk of the total return refrigerant flow going to the first stage compressor section. This tertiary system can also be applied to an ethylene plant with a high pressure demethanizer.

L'invention concerne un système de réfrigération destiné à une usine d'éthylène, comprenant un système de réfrigérant à trois constituants en circuit fermé contenant du méthane, de l'éthylène et du propylène. Ce système de réfrigérant est séparé à la sortie d'un compresseur en une fraction de vapeur riche en méthane et en deux niveaux de liquides riches en propylène pour obtenir diverses températures et divers niveaux de réfrigération dans divers étages d'échange de chaleur tout en maintenant une composition réfrigérante quasiment constante retournant vers le compresseur, le gros du réfrigérant de retour total allant vers la section du compresseur du premier étage. Ce système de réfrigérant peut également être appliqué à une usine d'éthylène utilisant un déméthaniseur haute pression.
