ABSTRACT A solid catalyst component which is prepared by: mixing an alkyl or aryl magnesium compound with a branched or aromatic aldehyde in the presence of a solvent or mixing two or more alkyl or aryl magnesium compounds with an aldehyde or ketone in the presence of a solvent; adding a tetravalent titanium halide to the solution; recovering the resulting pre- cipitate; and contacting the precipitate with a tetravalent titanium halide.
