A process for oligomerizing olefins having from 2 to 8 carbon atoms or mixtures thereof aver a nickel-containing catalyst at temperatures of from 0°C to 200°C and pressures of from 1 to 70 bar absolute. Prior to the oligomerization the hydrocarbon feedstock mixture is passed over a molecular sieve having a pore diameter of from greater than 4 angstrom to 15 angström. The step of passing the hydrocarbon feedstock mixture over a molecular sieve removes substantially catalyst poisons from the feedstock and prolongs considerably the lifetime of the nickel-containing catalyst making the process economical on an industrial scale.
