The build up of material on conveyor belt pulleys causes increase in diameter of the belt, and creates stresses on the belts because of differential tangential speeds on the pulleys, uneven pressure on the belt path causing shifting of the path. It also creates electrical overloads on the drive motors, and added stresses on mechanical components. Conveyor belt pulleys or large diameter pulleys need to be cleaned of the build up of material spilled from the conveyor belt. This cleaning is done by means of knives, secured to knife holders by means of a round shank fastened in place by a set screw. The knife holders are in turn moved along the surface of the pulley, along a path parallel to the axis of the pulley, in such a way as to enable the knives to cut the material packed onto the pulley surface directly off the surface of the pulley. The knives are usually designed so as to have a tangential scrapping action directed along the surface of the pulley and at 90 degrees to the axis of the pulley. The resulting forces exerted on the system are directly transmitted onto the knife holder, and on to the rigid support bar of the knife holders, thus transmitting high impact and friction forces onto the assembly. These forces create important wear problems for the system. The omni-directional pulley cleaner knife alleviates these wear problems by introducing a force parallel to the axis of the pulley in the resulting force from the scraping of the built up of material on the pulley, while extending the life of the knife itself.
