A geostationary satellite communications system occupies a segment of space having at least one satellite with a multi-beam telecommunications payload and a terrestrial segment having access gateways, one being in the coverage of each beam or group of beams and user terminals connecting with the satellite payload, the payload having three chains, a first chain on the return route from a user terminal to a gateway has a carrier router, routing on a group of carriers, basis signals multiplexed in frequency and time (MF/TDMA); a second chain on the outward route from a gateway to a user terminal has a frame router routing on a frame basis signals multiplexed in time (TDM); and a third chain including a mesh processor and having its output connected to the input of the second chain.
