A system and method of on-edge stacking of envelopes. The method including: comprising the steps of: receiving and transporting envelopes in and along an upper level of a diverter section; diverting envelopes selectively from the upper level to a lower level of the diverter section; propelling diverted envelopes from the lower level into spaces between legs of a spider wheel, the step of propelling including the steps of: rotating a paddle arrangement having substantially radially-oriented paddles; engaging trailing edges of envelopes with the paddles; and moving envelopes by the paddles toward the spider wheel; rotating the spider wheel; delivering envelopes from the spaces of said spider wheel onto a conveyor belt on-edge substantially in vertical orientation; and stacking and accumulating envelopes delivered onto the conveyor belt in side-on-side relationship; wherein the step of diverting includes; selectively opening a divert gate in the floor of the upper level; and intercepting envelopes that are transported during the step of receiving and transporting with the opened the divert gate and thereby directing envelopes to the lower level.
