A once through steam generator which comprises a pair of modular convection sections, a modular radiant section and at least one burner. Each of the modular convection sections has at least one convection inlet for receiving feed water, a series of parallel convection tubes in fluid communication with the convection inlet, and at least one convection outlet connected in fluid communication with the convection tubes, wherein the feed water is heated in the convection sections. The modular radiant section has a polyhedronal housing with a plurality of radiant inlets in fluid communication with the at least one convection outlet, a series of parallel radiant tubes in planes parallel to the convection section tubes, and a plurality of radiant outlets in fluid communication with the radiant tubes. The burner produces heat extending into the radiant section whereby heat from the radiant section passes to the radiant section. Preheated combustion air is delivered to the burner and is preheated in a preheater by passing over exhaust from the convection section.
