The present invention relates to a method of inducing proliferation and differentiation of mammalian hematopoietic stem cells by transfection and expression of the oncostatin M gene. The method also relates to a method of increasing the survival of lymphocytes exposed to cytotoxic agents or radiation by expressing oncostatin M in transfected hematopoietic stem cells.
