A process for the preparation of fiber reinforced composites in which the matrix polymer is derived from the catalyzed reaction of a liquid polyisocyanate containing material. The principle curing mechanism is the formation of urethane and/or isocyanurate linkages. At least a portion of the catalyst is applied onto the surface of the reinforcing fibers and/or onto the surface to the uncured resin impregnated reinforcing structure, under conditions such that the catalyst is not dispersed into the bulk of the isocyanate containing resin until cure. Curing is facilitated by a combination of mechanical and thermal action. The process is particularly well suited for the preparation of composites by pultrusion, using a one-component open-bath pultrusion machine. The process of the invention may be adapted to a much wider range of composite fabrication methods, including SMC and filament winding.

L'invention concerne un procédé de préparation de composites fibreux renforcés, dans lequel le polymère matriciel est dérivé d'une réaction catalysée d'une matière contenant un polyisocyanate liquide. Le mécanisme de durcissement donné comme principe consiste en la formation de liaisons uréthane et/ou isocyanurate. Au moins une partie du catalyseur est appliquée sur la surface des fibres de renforcement et/ou sur la surface de la structure de renforcement imprégnée de résine non durcie, dans des conditions telles que le catalyseur ne soit pas dispersé dans la masse de résine contenant de l'isocyanate jusqu'à son durcissement, ce dernier étant facilité par une combinaison d'action mécanique et thermique. Le procédé est particulièrement bien adapté à la préparation de composites par pultrusion, à l'aide d'une machine de pultrusion en bain ouvert à un composant. Selon l'invention, ce procédé peut être adapté à une gamme beaucoup plus large de procédés de fabrication de composites, notamment le SMC (préimprégné) et l'enroulement filamentaire.
