ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A one-piece pipe insulator is formed as a cylinder of fibrous material bonded together by a heat hardened bonding sub- stance and having a longitudinal slit extending through the wall of the cylinder, which is flexible to allow opposed longitudinal edge portions of the cylinder defining the slit to be spread apart to enable the insulator to be fitted around a pipe. The fibrous material comprises fibre laminas initially produced in a forming section and extending radially of the cylinder wall at the edge portions in order to reinforce the latter to reduce breakage of the edge portions as the pipe insulator is fitted around the pipe. At the remainder of the cylinder wall, the fibre laminas extend around the cylinder wall.
