ABSTRACT A device for use in effecting intra-venous injection or blood transfusion includes a metal needle having a bore through which blood or fluid to be injected may flow, and a sharp tip capable of penetrating into a vein. A rod is co- axial with the needle and has a bore communicating with the bore of the needle which extends from the rod. A cylinder encases the rod, and has a first end from which a TeflonTM tube extends. The TeflonTM tube has a bore which snugly fits the needle, and a second end from which the end of the rod remote from the needle extends. A connecting socket extends from and is co-axial with the rod and has a bore communicating with the bore of the rod. The socket is adapted to engage the end of a transfusion or injection tube. The rod is moveable in the cylinder from a first position in which the metal needle protrudes slightly from the TeflonTM tube to a second position in which the metal needle is withdrawn from the TeflonTM tube.
