The invention provides a new and novel method of backing up data, files and programs from a user's computers or servers to a remote backup service provider over the internet. The system proposed has a simple downloadable client program that is initially received from the backup service provider over the internet. The program automatically installs and runs without need for any configuration by the user. The program automatically scans the users machine for all files or data objects that require backing up based on it's internal programmed logic. It then compares this index with one provided by the backup server that contains the information as to what the client program has already backed up during previous backup sessions. The client program creates a merged list to only include the local data objects that have changed or are new on the user's computer. It then uploads in an optimized and encrypted fashion the identified data objects requiring backup to the backup server. The user's files, or more generically the data objects, are stored at the servers of the backup service provider in case the originals are lost from the user's computer or server.
