ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION An open network system includes a network and modules connected thereto, one of said modules being an operator station. Each module further includes an internal bus operatively connected to the network, a module central processing unit (CPU), and a module memory, both being coupled to the internal bus. The operator station also includes a display unit connected to the operator station. An apparatus further provides an interface to at least one foreign system such that display information from the foreign systems and from the network system can be displayed on the display unit. The apparatus comprises a processor for receiving display information from the foreign system which is to be displayed on the display unit. The processor also provides control information for the display unit. Also included is a graphics element operatively connected to the processor and to the internal bus, for generating formatted display information from display information received from the processor and the internal bus to be presented on the display unit in response to the control information received from the processor.
