ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Open-loop means are described for controlling the output speed of a D.C. motor connected to selectively move a carriage-mounted print head across the width of a paper document in either a forward or a reverse direction. Solid state switch means initially couples a first voltage source to the D.C. motor to rapidly accelerate the print head in a first direction. As soon as the print head reaches the desired velocity, the first voltage source is decoupled from the motor and a second highly regulated source is coupled to the D.C. motor to maintain movement of the print head at the desired constant velocity. The switch means is adapted to reverse the polarity of the voltage at the input terminals of the D.C. motor to rapidly decelerate the print head, accelerate the print head in the opposite direction and subsequently maintain the desired constant velocity of the print head as it moves the reverse direction. Logic means detects the direction of carriage movement and connects the first voltage source to the D.C. motor for a time interval suffi- cient to bring the D.C. motor to the desired final constant speed in as short an acceleration interval as is practical. The second voltage source maintains the constant speed until the print head reaches the end of the line. As the print head moves to the end of a line, the logic means reverses the connection polarity to the motor and reapplies the first voltage for substantially the same time interval initially required for acceleration, so as to rapidly decelerate and halt print head motion, or alternatively applies the opposite polarity first voltage level for twice said time interval to bring the motor up to constant speed in the reverse direction. 1. in as short a time interval as is practical. Additional means apply the increased acceleration voltage in the carriage return direction for a proportionally shorter time interval after less than a full line is printed, to reduce carriage return travel time without damage that might otherwise be caused by excessive acceleration thereof.
