ABSTRACT An opening device for flexible packaging is provided to concentrate tearing forces and provide increased tearing leverage, facilitating the opening of the packaging without the need for a sharp object to initiate the tear, the opening device having first and second wings spaced apart from one another at a narrow distance and joined at a proximal end by an integral web, which acts as a fulcrum for each of the wings as they are rotated to initiate the tear. The opening device is securely fastened to a peripheral edge of the package and a predetermined portion of the first and second wings extend outwardly away from the peripheral edge, the wings serving as gripping surfaces which are rotated apart from one another in initiating the tear in the package.
