A method and apparatus for operating an electric brake system for an aircraft involves operating the electric brake system in a pedal braking mode, monitoring a power status signal of the electric brake system and detecting onset of a power interrupt condition based upon the power status signal. A current pedal braking command is purged in response to detecting onset of the power interrupt condition. The current pedal braking command controls electric actuation of a brake mechanism in the electric brake system, and generates an updated pedal braking command that indicates brake pedal deflection upon termination of the power interrupt condition. The electric brake system is controlled to provide seamless application of brakes upon termination of the power interrupt condition, wherein controlling the electric brake system involves processing the updated pedal braking command.
