An operating mechanism for producing controlled linear motion includes means for producing a dynamic motive force, and at least one static energy storage means including means for releasing said static energy within controlled parameters to thereby carry out the function requiring said controlled linear motion. The controlled linear motion is utilized e.g. to open and close electrical contacts and to provide a consistent high force required up to and at contact separation. Contact rebound after opening or contact separation is controlled within predetermined parameters.
