A method and apparatus for providing an operating system abstraction interface for a set-top television terminal used within a broadband environment. The interface defines an OS independent layer (102) that abstracts the services that are needed to implement the set-top firmware (104) in an OS independent manner. The present invention provides several constructs that are unique to the broadband environment. These include a synchronization feature (106), a block feature (108) and Inter-process naming tags that are provided such that the interface of the present invention may be adapted for both process based operating systems and non-process based operating systems.
Cette invention a trait à un procédé ainsi qu'à l'appareil correspondant fournissant une interface d'abstraction de système d'exploitation pour un terminal décodeur de télévision utilisé dans une environnement à bande large. Cette interface définit une couche indépendante du système d'exploitation (OS) (102) qui retire les services nécessaires à la mise en oeuvre du logiciel microprogrammé de décodage (104) de manière indépendante de l'OS. Cette invention permet d'obtenir plusieurs construits qui sont uniques relativement à l'environnement à bande large. Au nombre de ces construits figurent un élément de synchronisation (106), un élément de bloc (108) ainsi que des étiquettes de dénomination inter-traitement, lesquels éléments permettent une adaptation de l'interface selon l'invention, tant à des systèmes d'exploitation axés sur le traitement qu'à des systèmes d'exploitation axés sur une absence de traitement.
