ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to an ophthalmic compo- sition for the topical treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension comprising in solution an intraocular pressure lowering effective amount of an R stereoisomer free of S stereoisomer of a .beta.-adrenergic blocking agent selected from the group methypranol; propranolol; timolol; alprenolol; oxprenolol; practolol; acebutolol; prindolol; metoprolol; ?tenolol; sotalol; metlndol; nadolol; labetalol; practolol; bunitrolol;RMI 81968 (medroxalol); tiprenolol; tolamolol; celiprolol; mepindolol; indenolol; bupranolol; penbutolol; tri- mepranol; (R)-2-(3-(1,1-dimethylethyl)amino-2-hydroxy- propoxy)-3-pyridenecarbonitrile hydrochloride; 1-tert- butylamino-3-(2,5-dichlorophenoxy)-2-propanol; 1-iso- propylamino-3-[4-(2-cyclopropylmethoxy-ethyl)phenoxy]- 2-propanol; 3-isopropylamino-1-(7-methylindan-4-yloxy)- 2-butanol; 2-(3-tert-butylamino-2-hydroxypropylthio)-4- (5-carbamoyl-2-th.ienyl)thiazole, and 7-(2-hydroxy-3- tert-butylaminopropoxy)phthalide.
