The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for optical coherence reflectometry, in particular for optical coherence tomography. The invention particularly relates to the route of the light field in the sample arm. The reflected light field in the sample arm is amplified before being received by a combining means, said combining means being capable of receiving the reflected light field from the sample arm as well as the second reflected light field from the reference arm. Thereby, it is possible to direct substantially all light energy in the sample arm to the combining means, and to obtain fully the utilisation of the amplification of the reflected light field since preferably only the reflected light field is amplified by the optical amplifier. This leads to an improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) whereby an increase of the maximal penetration depth is obtained. Thereby, the apparatus is useful for obtaining optical biopsies of transparent as well as non-transparent tissues as well as new technical fields wherein the increased SNR allows the use of the present apparatus.

L'invention concerne un appareil et un procédé de réflectométrie de cohérence, en particulier destinés à une tomographie par cohérence optique. Elle concerne en particulier le chemin du champ lumineux dans le bras échantillon. Le champ lumineux réfléchi dans le bras échantillon est amplifié avant d'être reçu sur des moyens de combinaison, ces moyens permettant de recevoir le champ lumineux réfléchi provenant du bras échantillon aussi bien que le second champ lumineux réfléchi provenant du bras de référence. Il est ainsi possible de diriger sensiblement toute l'énergie lumineuse du bras échantillon vers les moyens de combinaison et d'obtenir complètement l'utilisation de l'amplification du champ lumineux réfléchi puisque, de préférence, seul le champ lumineux réfléchi est amplifié par l'amplificateur optique. On obtient ainsi un rapport signal sur bruit amélioré en même temps qu'une augmentation de la profondeur maximale de pénétration. L'appareil est ainsi utile pour l'obtention de biopsies optiques de tissus transparents et non transparents, ainsi que dans d'autres domaines techniques dans lesquels le rapport signal sur bruit amélioré permet l'utilisation de cet appareil.
