OPTICAL APPARATUS FOR SELECTIVELY PRODUCING RIPPLED MESSAGE IMAGES IN AREAS OF SPECULAR SURFACED PHOTOPLASTIC FILM AND ERASING SUCH IMAGES FROM SUCH AREAS FOR REUSE ABSTRACT Optical camera and image processing apparatus for selectively producing rippled message images in frame areas of specular sur- faced photoplastic film by image patterned electrostatic charge and heat deformation. Image bearing light beam is projected through an objective lens unit and focused upon a transverse photo- plastic film supporting means. Such supporting means includes a lateral platen located back of a section of said film which margins a specular surface area of such a film frame. Means intervening the objective lens unit and the position of a film section when supported upon the platen provides an optical aperture. This film supporting platen has an opening opposite the optical aperture whereby the back of the film opposite its specular surface area is accessible. A heatable metallic block is movably mounted so that it can be moved forward into the platen opening for contact of the accessible area of the back of the film to effect conduction heat softening of this film area that is located between the optical aperture and the platen opening for producing such a rippled frame area. Grounding means is associated with the film section when supported upon this apertured platen, and electrostatic charging means imposes upon the platen a relatively large electrostatic charge differential which causes the platen supported film area to be snugged to the platen. Between the film supporting means and the objective lens unit is provided means for producing and directing forward to the platen supported area of the film an electrostatic charge. It is preferable to provide between the objective lens unit and such electrostatic charging means a shutter mechanism which may be open- ed to pass the image supporting beam onward to the supported film area and to terminate such beam passing with a discontinuance of the application of the electrostatic charging action. Various forms of optical apparatus for using specular surfaced photoplastic film to bear or bearing rippled message images in frame areas thereof may be provided which are to handle such film in a form having a conductive substrate below its upper heat- softenable and image rippleable emulsion layer serving as an electrostatic grounding means, such apparatus will include platen means having a lateral film supporting surface with an area of the latter contacting the lower side of an area of such film, and means imposing a relatively large electrostatic charge differential upon said platen to cause the area of said film that is in contact with said piston to be snugged to the latter by electrostatic charge adherence.
