ABSTRACT A preformed component for use in effecting an optical connection between optical fibres of optical cables comprises a housing in which optical conductors are so disposed that opposite end parts of each conductor protrude from the housing at an acute angle to one another lying in the range 0° to 90°; preferably, the end parts protrude in substantially the same direction. At least each of the protruding parts of each optical conductor consists of an optical fibre which can be spliced to one of two optical fibres to be optically connected. The preformed component and the protected optical fibre splices can be disposed in a cassette in such a way that the splices are spaced from the preformed component by a distance which can be reduced to accommodate for re-splicing of any unsatisfactory splice, the protruding parts of each optical conductor providing excess fibre length.
