ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A sensor for monitoring a chemical condition such as pH includes a luminescent material insensitive to the condition to be sensed. The luminescent material can absorb light in two excitation wavelength bands and emit response light as a result of absorption in either band. The sensor also includes a dye having absorptivity in one such excitation wavelength band which varies with the condition to be monitored. The luminescent material is illuminated with excitation light in the two excitation wavelength bands alternately. Response to the one excitation varies with the condition, whereas response to the second does not vary and provides an internal reference. The invention also provides vinyl functionalized photoactive materials such as dyes and luminescent materials which can be incorporated into vinyl polymers. The vinyl functionalized photoactive material maybe made by reacting a vinyl benzyl halide reagent with a photoactive material having a phenol group. The vinyl benzyl functionality is bound to the phenol group in the ortho position relative to the OH group of the phenol.
