An apparatus (14) for compensation or emulation of PMD effects occurring in an optical signal travelling over an optical fiber based link comprises controllable birefringence sections (15-18) and devices (19-22) for polarization conversion. Each section comprises birefringence optical members or parts thereof and each section is followed or preceded by one of said controllable devices for polarization conversion. The birefringence sections (15-18) are at least three in number and at least one of these has a propagation delay different from that of the other sections. The apparatus comprises a detection device (24) for PMD output and control of controllable devices (19-22) for feedback adjustment thereof so as to keep the detected PMD below a predetermined amount. The apparatus compensates or emulates the PMD effects on a selectable B band. A communication system (10) comprises a transmission apparatus which sends signals to a receiving system (12) by means of a fiber based link (13) with the signal also going through the compensation apparatus (14) as stated above.
L'invention concerne un appareil (14) de compensation et d'émulation des effets de la PMD produits dans un signal optique qui se déplace sur une liaison basée sur des fibres optiques. Cet appareil comprend des sections (15-18) et des dispositifs (19-22) biréfringents réglables pour la conversion de la polarisation. Chaque section comprend des éléments optiques biréfringents ou des parties de ces éléments et chaque section est suivie ou précédée par un desdits dispositifs réglables pour la conversion de la polarisation. Les sections biréfringentes (15-18) sont au nombre d'au moins trois, dont l'une au moins présente un retard de propagation différent de celui des autres sections. L'appareil selon l'invention comprend un dispositif de détection (24) de la PMD de sortie et de commande des dispositifs réglables (19-22) pour le réglage en rétroaction de ces derniers afin de maintenir la PMD détectée sous un certain seuil. L'appareil selon l'invention compense ou émule les effets de la PMD sur une bande B sélectionnable. Un système de communication (10) comprend un appareil de transmission qui envoie des signaux à un système de réception (122) au moyen d'une liaison basée sur des fibres optiques (13), le signal traversant également l'appareil de compensation (14), tel que décrit ci-dessus.
