ABSTRACT A communications cable based on optical fibres comprises a core with a plurality of external helically extending channels each containing a number, for example ten, fibres. The core is covered by an outer sheath having removable strips defined by zones of weakness, each strip extending helically and being positioned over one of the channels of the core. Prior art cables comprised fibres extending along the centre of a cable and surrounded by protective layers and this provided a problem with access to the fibres.
