A light concentrator for use in conjunction with a light emitter having an emitting end from which light energy suitable for initiating a photoreaction is emitted. The concentrator has a housing with a first end and a second end, the first end being adapted to engage the emitting end of the light emitter, and an optical concentrator assembly substantially aligned within the housing and having a negative amplification factor for receiving light energy from the light emitter and emitting redirected light energy which has been focused to a focused image position remote from the second end of the housing. A method is also disclosed for directing light energy suitable for initiating a photoreaction, onto photoreactive material having a surface, including the following steps: generating light energy suitable for initiating a photoreaction; causing the generated light energy to be emitted from a light emitting end of a light emitter; directing light energy emitted from the light emitter into a light concentrator to focus the light energy; and directing the focused light energy onto the photoreactive material.
