ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE : The invention concerns a brancher-mixer for optical fibres bundles intended for optical transmissions of "busbar" type. This brancher-mixer enables the luminous energy emanating from the individual fibres of a trans- mitting bundle to be first mixed and then divided between two receiving bundles. It essentially comprises two branching monofibres, each consisting of a core and a surrounding cladding and laterally arranged at one of their ends to divide into two equal or inequal parts the luminous flux emanating from the transmitting bundle. According to a first specific embodiment, the two branching monofibres remain equipped with their cladding on both sides of the common joining surface and an additional mixing monofibre is inserted between the transmitting bundle and the joined ends of the branching monofibres. According a second specific embodiment, the two branching monofibres ends are stripped from their cladding on both sides of the common joining surface and coupled by sealing or welding to form a single mixing optical channel. In both embodiments the two branching monofibres are arranged in a common casing provided with mechanical connections to establish the optical connections to the emitting and receiving bundles. There is thus provided a small low cost monolithic component for optical links with minimal inser- tion losses.
