The invention provides a high capacity three-dimensional, optically-addressed storage device (1) comprising multiple juxtaposed storage layers (3, 4, 5) from which digital data stored in any given layer can be rapidly and reliably retrieved despite the presence of data stored in other layers and, in particular, the extreme proximity of data stored in neighbouring layers. In order to retrieve information stored in the device, interrogating radiation is projected through the device orthogonally to the layers, possibly in a flood beam but preferably in a beam defined by means of an electronic mask, such as a TFT array or a liquid crystal device. In any event, the interrogating beam is repeatedly refocussed during its passage through the device to reduce retrieval errors associated with beam spreading. The given layer is selected by illumination with a selecting beam of radiation projected across the layer in question, to interact with optically sensitive material deposited at selected digital storage locations in the layer, so as to cause that material to absorb the radiation of the interrogating beam significantly more strongly than it does in the absence of the radiation of the selecting beam.
L'invention concerne un dispositif de stockage (1) grande capacité, tridimensionnel, à adressage optique, comprenant plusieurs couches de stockage juxtaposées (3, 4, 5), à partir desquelles il est possible d'extraire de manière rapide et fiable des données numériques stockées dans l'une quelconque de ces couches, malgré la présence de données stockées dans d'autres couches et, notamment, l'extrême proximité de données stockées dans des couches voisines. Afin d'extraire des informations conservées dans ce dispositif, un rayonnement d'interrogation est projeté à travers le dispositif, perpendiculairement aux couches, éventuellement dans un faisceau d'arrosage, mais de préférence dans un faisceau délimité au moyen d'un masque électronique, tel qu'un ensemble transistors couche mince ou un dispositif à cristaux liquides. En tout état de cause, le faisceau d'interrogation est focalisé à nouveau et de manière répétée lors de son passage à travers le dispositif, afin de réduire les erreurs d'extraction associées à l'étalement du faisceau. La couche donnée est choisie par éclairage au moyen d'un faisceau de rayonnement et de sélection, projeté à travers la couche en question et destiné à interagir avec un matériau, sensible sur le plan optique, déposé au niveau d'emplacements de stockage numériques choisis de la couche, afin de forcer ce matériau à absorber le rayonnement du faisceau d'interrogation plus fortement qu'il ne le fait en l'absence de rayonnement du faisceau de sélection.
