An optical data storage medium is described. It comprises at least a substrate, having a surface with data stored in pits that are embossed into the substrate and in spaces separating the pits, a reflective layer covering the surface and having an intrinsic optical reflectivity R at a wavelenght .lambda., a transparent cover stack formed on the reflective layer, the pattern of pits being readable through the cover stack by means of the focused radiation beam having the wavelength .lambda.. The value of R on the spaces separating the pits is substantially different from the value of R on the bottom of the pits. An improved signal quality is achieved, e.g for BD-ROM discs. Further methods for manufacturing such a medium are described, e.g. inclined sputtering or selective etching.

L'invention concerne un support optique qui comprend au moins un substrat possédant une surface présentant des données stockées dans des microcuvettes estampées dans le substrat ainsi que dans des espaces séparant les microcuvettes, une couche réfléchissante recouvrant la surface et possédant une réflectivité optique intrinsèque R à une longueur d'onde .lambda., une couche de couverture transparente formée sur la couche réfléchissante. Le motif des micro-cuvettes est lisible à travers la couche de couverture au moyen d'un faisceau de rayonnement concentré présentant une longueur d'onde .lambda.. La valeur de R sur les espaces séparant les micro-cuvettes est sensiblement différente de la valeur R du fond des micro-cuvettes. Une meilleure qualité de signal est obtenue, par exemple pour les disques BD-ROM. D'autres procédés de fabrication dudit support sont décrits, comme par exemple un procédé de pulvérisation ou de gravure sélective.
