ABSTRACT Optical detection of contrasted particles in an image A process is described for detecting those objects of a picture which have a selected size and whose contrast with respect to the background exceeds a predetermined value. The picture consists of pixels x each having a digital value F(x) of an optical property such as brightness. The process comprises processing the picture to retain only those pixels x whose connected particle, obtained by thresholding at the value F(x) - H (where H is a predetermined digital value) is not preserved by a selection process based on size criteria and implying successive mathematical morphology trans- formations which make it appear, in the larger particles only, a marker from which said particles may be re- generated by grain reconstruction. The process may be used for HLA typing.
