An optical device for processing an input optical serial sequence of phase-modulated N-bits having a predetermined one-bit time slot in order to compare said input optical serial sequence of phase-modulated N-bits with a predetermined sequence of N-bits, said device comprising a) input means for said input optical serial sequence of phase-modulated N-bits; b) a first optical element for converting said input optical serial sequence of phase-modulated N-bits into an optical parallel pattern of phase-modulated N-bits carrying the same information as said input optical serial sequence of phase-modulated N-bits; c) a second optical element capable of causing a phase delay of at least one bit of said optical parallel pattern, said phase delay having a preselected value depending on said predetermined N-bits sequence.
