A solar control film having low visible light transmittance and low visible light reflectance is comprised of two or more transparent substrates (14) each bearing a thin, transparent, discontinuous, incoherent film of metal (18) having low visible light reflectance and a degree of visible light blocking capacity, the substrates being so assembled and laminated into a composite (10) that the visible light blocking capacities of the metal films are effectively combined to provide a composite having low visible light transmittance as well as low visible light reflectance. Performance characteristics are enhanced by providing on one or more of the substrates a transparent coating (16) of high refractive index underlying the metal film. The material of high refractive index is preferably a synthetic high oxygen content oxide of bismuth, which facilitates efficient and economical production of the solar control film.

Un film de filtrage solaire présentant un facteur de transmission faible de la lumière visible ainsi qu'une faible réflectance de la lumière visible se compose d'au moins deux substrats transparents (14) portant chacun un film en métal mince (18) transparent, discontinu, incohérent, présentant une faible réflectance de la lumière visible ainsi qu'un certain degré de capacité de blocage de la lumière visible, les substrats étant assemblés et stratifiés en un composite (10) de sorte que les capacités de blocage de la lumière visible des films en métal sont combinées efficacement pour produire un composite présentant un facteur de transmission faible ainsi qu'une faible réflectance de la lumière visible. Les caractéristiques de rendement sont accrues par la disposition d'un revêtement transparent (16), d'indice de réfraction élevé, sous le film en métal, sur un ou plusieurs des substrats. Le matériau d'indice de réfraction élevé est de préférence un oxyde de bismuth synthétique à forte teneur en oxygène, lequel facilite la production efficace et économique du film de filtrage solaire.
