An entirely passive all-optical device, referred to as an optical hard limiter, consists of alternating layers of materials having oppositely signed Kerr coefficients and substantially different linear indices of refraction, wherein the higher linear index material has the negative Kerr coefficient and the lower linear index material has the positive Kerr coefficient. The optical device has two distinct transmittance curves. Various optical devices and systems can be built from such optical hard limiters.
L'invention concerne un dispositif tout optique entièrement passif, désigné sous le nom de limiteur strict optique. Ce dispositif est constitué de couches alternées de matériaux présentant des coefficients de Kerr de signe opposé et des indices linéaires de réfraction sensiblement différents, le matériau présentant l'indice linéaire le plus élevé possédant un coefficient de Kerr négatif et le matériau présentant l'indice linéaire le moins élevé possédant un coefficient de Kerr positif. Ce dispositif optique présente deux courbes de transmittance distinctes. Divers dispositifs et systèmes optiques peuvent être fabriqués à partir de ce type de limiteur strict optique.
