An optical device includes a waveguide bounded by a region containing a photonic band gap the properties of which determined the transfer characteristic of the waveguide. Such a device may serve as a component of, for example a wavelength division multiplexer, a monochromatic laser or a chemical sensor. It may serve as an optical bus for an electronic component such as a microprocessor. These devices are particularly suitable for incorporation in optical and optoelectronic integrated circuits as they permit the fabrication of waveguides having right-angle bends with a radius of the order of 2 µm.

On décrit un dispositif optique qui inclut un guide d'onde borné par une région contenant une largeur de bande interdite photonique dont les propriétés ont déterminé la caractéristique de transfert du guide d'onde. Ledit dispositif peut être utilisé comme composant, par exemple, d'un multiplexeur en longueur d'onde, d'un laser monochromatique ou d'un détecteur chimique. Il peut aussi servir de bus optique pour un composant électronique tel qu'un microprocesseur. Ces dispositifs conviennent particulièrement pour équiper des circuits intégrés optiques ou optoélectroniques, étant donné qu'ils permettent de fabriquer des guides d'onde ayant un cintrage à angle droit et un rayon de l'ordre de 2 mu m.
