A B S T R A C T Disclosed is an arrangement for displaying bright images against a dark background, comprising a liquid crystal cell and a light trap in the form of a body of fluorescent particles (fluorescent body) being made from a material having a refractive index greater than 1 and being provided with light-emergence windows which in viewing direction are each disposed behind the switchable zones of the liquid crystal layer. It has been provided according to the present invention that the liquid crystal layer contains at least one pleochroic dye. That dye preferably has a spectral range of maximum absorption which substantially coincides with the spectral range of maximum emission of the fluorescent particles. The main field of use of the invention is in electro optical displays, in particular indicators for time pieces.
