ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION An apparatus for relaying physiological data from a patient along a communications path to an electronic data processing system includes an optical interrupter which electrically isolates the patient from the data processing system. Specifically, the interrupter includes a monitor that receives physiological data from the patient in the form of electrical signals, and converts this electrical signal into an optical signal. The interrupter also includes a transmitter which receives the optical signal sent from the monitor, reconverts it to an electrical signal and then transmits the reconstituted electrical signal to the data system. The data processing system includes a central processing unit which is electrically connectable via a telephone line to at least one of a plurality of the transmitters. Additionally, the central processing unit is electrically connectable via a telephone line to at least one of a plurality of receiving stations. Through these various connections, a communications path is established for sending the physiological data from a particular patient to a selected receiving station in the data processing system. Specifically, the data is transmitted as an electrical signal to the monitor where the electrical signal is interrupted and converted into an optical signal. The transmitter receives this optical signal and converts it back to an electrical signal for further transmission, via a telephone line, from the transmitter and through the central processing unit to a receiving station.
