An optical encoder comprising a light source emitting a light beam, a first lenticular array to which the light beam is directed, a second movable lenticular array to which the light beams exiting from the first lenticular array is directed and a light receiving element. The individual lenslets in the first and the second lenticular array define the light beam into fine beams of periodic pattern or dark and bright fringes. As the movable lenticular array is being displaced in a direction parallel to the first lenticular array, the incident angle of the light beam exiting from the first lenticular array to the second lenticular array is changed, which results in a change in the position of the periodic pattern. Thus, as the position of the periodic pattern is changing, the output of the light receiving element varies according and may readily be converted to a digital signal indicative of the position and direction of the movable lenticular array.

L'invention est constituée par un codeur optique comportant une source émettant un faisceau lumineux, un premier réseau lenticulaire sur lequel ce faisceau lumineux est dirigé, un second réseau lenticulaire mobile sur lequel sont dirigés les faisceaux lumineux émergeant du premier réseau lenticulaire, et un élément photorécepteur. Les lentilles individuelles du premier et du second réseau lenticulaire décomposent le faisceau lumineux en pinceaux formant une configuration périodique de franges sombres et de franges claires. Quand le réseau lenticulaire mobile est déplacé parallèlement au premier réseau lenticulaire, l'angle d'incidence du faisceau lumineux transmis par le premier réseau lenticulaire au second est modifié, ce qui modifie la position de la configuration périodique.
