A ferrule for an optical fiber comprises a cover and a base. The base and the cover include a pair of complementary-profile mating surfaces. At least one of the mating surfaces has a trough that receives an optical fiber. The complementary-profile mating surfaces each have geometric features that substantially align the cover in relation to the base in both the lateral and the longitudinal directions. The base-to-cover alignment is performed on a passive basis by placing the cover on the base in a manner that causes the noted geometric features on the cover to engage corresponding geometric features on the base.
